You do not need to write a letter for passport renewal. There are two ways that you can get your passport renewed and this depends on your circumstances and how old the passport you are renewing is.

  • By mail
If you have a passport that was issued in the last 15 years you can renew it by mail. Your passport must be undamaged and you do have to fill in a form to apply for renewal. The form that you need for this application is a DS-82 form and you can download these forms from the Internet or get them from your local post office.
To apply by mail you must already have an adult passport, passports for children must be applied for in person and with the parents or legal guardians present. You must also have the passport in your current name. If you have changed your name by deed poll or have married since your last passport was issued, you must apply in person.

When sending this form by mail, you should send it by special or traceable delivery. You will have to go through a much longer process if this gets lost in the postal system and there is also the chance that your identity could get stolen if a passport and form with your personal detail on it get lost in the post and end up in the wrong hands.
  • In person
You can also apply for a passport in person. You will have to do this if you have not owned a passport before, as you will have to verify your identity. You may also have to get someone else to verify your identity too. You also have to apply in person if you have changed your name since your last passport was issued. You will have to provide your deed poll or marriage certificates to get this changed. You will also have to apply in this way if your current passport is lost or damaged. To apply in person you must go to your regional passport office.
