The serial number tells the manufacture date of Brother machines:
The first character is alphabetic (A through M without using "I" as it is easy to confuse with the number "1") indicates the month of manufacture. A is January B is Feb and so on.
The second character is a number representing the year of manufacture,
9 = 1999 or 2009
8 = 1998 or 2008 etc
