Harry Potter's mother's maiden name was Lily Evans. She was born of muggle parents, but with magical powers. These were not shared by her sister Petunia, who later became Mrs Vernon Dursley. She was in the same year as James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew and Severus Snape. She and Severus Snape both came from the same village, and SS always wanted to marry her himself. When he was sorted into Slytherin and she was sorted into Gryffindor, he came under the influence of the future death eaters who were there at the time, such as Avery and Mulciber. Lily did not approve of this, broke of her friendship with him and eventually married James Potter, whom she at first thought arrogant.
