Overcome by a sudden fear that he would be abandoned, he spent several days following his companion with a razor, eventually cutting off part of his own ear. He later gave this to a prostitute. This occurred on 23rd December, after which he was hospitalised for several days. He returned to the scene of his crisis during the following January but was still at the mercy of hallucinations and acute paranoia. He was eventually sectioned at the insistence of the residents of the town in which he lived, who had dubbed him the 'redheaded madman'.
