Vincent Van Gogh is generally regarded as one of the most important artists of all time. This is in spite, or perhaps as a result, of a history of mental illness which plagued him throughout his life.

Van Gogh had displayed certain erratic characteristics for many years, but reached a crisis point in December 1888, when he visited Arles with fellow painter Paul Gauguin. Overcome by a sudden fear that he would be abandoned, he spent several days following his companion with a razor, eventually cutting off part of his own ear. He later gave this to a prostitute. This occurred on 23rd December, after which he was hospitalised for several days. He returned to the scene of his crisis during the following January but was still at the mercy of hallucinations and acute paranoia. He was eventually sectioned at the insistence of the residents of the town in which he lived, who had dubbed him the 'redheaded madman'.

Actually, people are starting to question if he ever did really cut off his ear. There isn't any specific proof. That's all I can add.
