A novel is a book of fiction. Not all books are fiction.

A book is just the physical thing: Bound paper with covers. A novel is a fictional story that's longer than a novella and short story.

A novel is a work of fiction while non-fiction books on every subject abound.

Yet the purists would tell you that not all fiction qualifies as a novel. In their opinion a novel comes dressed in a tuxedo while the kind of story most of us enjoy reading are likely to turn out wearing a t-shirt and flip-flops. The difference is often in the eye of the beholder.
