I used to lend freely but I've lost so many valued books over the years that I'm now reluctant to do so.

Most come back but those that go missing always seem to be those you value the most. How do they KNOW?

Same here, lost a copy of the Shining before I read it a second time. Expected it right back huh lesson learned. I have a section of my bookcase with bupes, those are free to loan. I get most of those at the library they have a reading room full of books & DVDs for sale at .25 - $1.00. I don't mind losing those.

Our local Salvation Army store is overstocked with books and offers a carry bag for $1 which you can then fill with books for another $10. Most of those get returned or recycled, one way or another. It seems as though they're giving them away but, in fact, it operates more like a library. They mostly get the books back and the $11 to boot.

One Blurter wanted to send me a stamped, self-addressed envelope so I could lend him a copy of my novel, which he would then return to me. I went one step further and said I'd GIVE him a copy (I have a few spares) but the stamped envelope never came. I think he must have realised that the cost of mailing it would be greater than the cost of buying the Kindle version.

I also have leant out books with the understanding that I was lending, not giving, to no avail. I've never gotten them back. So, I don't lend any longer, especially books that hold special meaning for me. I direct them to the library if they want to read a certain book.

If there is a book I want to keep I will not lend it out, but I may buy a copy as a gift. Most of what I read is of the guilty pleasure type. Of mystery/romance. They are not great works of literature, but are fun, easy reads and a great escape when needed. I have just given those to others to read. I ask they either pass them on to another friend or to donate them.
