Hello there!

If  you are intending to remove your son or daughter from school,  it is courteous to write to the principal or headteacher and let him or her know the reason why.

The tone of the letter will very much depend on the reason you are taking the pupil out - but in any case it should always be business-like and properly addressed and dated.  Again it is usually polite to give advance notice. (unless you have to leave quickly).

The letter should look like this:-

Mr John Smith                                                                                                 Highfields Elementary School                                                                                 (Address of school)

Date

Dear Mr (or Principal) Smith

I am writing to inform you that I intend to remove my son John Brown, Class 4B, from Highfields Elementary school, at the end of this term, July 31 2014.

My husband has been offered a new job in London and we are in the process of selling our house here and purchasing one near London.  John will attend the local school in our new village.

John has been very happy in Highfields school and has improved a great deal with his studies, especially Mathematics. We are sad to move him but hope he will be able to build on the good work you have accomplished here.  He will miss his teachers and his friends.

I would like to thank you and your staff for all your hard work and wish you every success in the future.

Yours sincerely

Karen Brown

(or if it's not been so happy)

Dear Mr (or Principal) Smith

I am writing to inform you that I intend to remove my son John Brown, Class 4B,  from Highfields Elemantary school, at the end of this term, July 31 2014.

As from the beginning of next term,  1 September 2014, John will be attending Lowfields Primary school in Newtown. He has not settled well in Highfields, and has not progressed with his studies in the way we had hoped.

I feel a fresh start in new school, with new teachers will be the best solution.

Yours sincerely,

Karen Brown

Hope this helps!
