The value of a painting is entirely dependent on a variety of factors and the value cannot be established from your simple question. When an art trader is looking a painting and attempting to give it value, this requires them to look at a number of things to do with the painting and these include the authenticity, age and condition of the painting.

  • Do you have an original artwork?

Of course - one of the most important things to establish first is if the painting is indeed an authentic piece of art from the artist that is being claimed to have made it. This can normally be established by checking for a seal or signature that the artist will have placed onto the painting somewhere.

As well as the signature or seal, it is likely that the artist will have dated the painting somewhere also. In fact - this is often alongside or underneath the artist's seal or signature. Generally, the older the painting the more value it has, but this is dependent on who the artist is and so forth.

Then they will establish what sort of condition the painting is in. If it has been kept in pristine condition then it is obviously going to have a much higher value than if it is damaged in any way. However - minor damage can always be repaired by experts so all is not entirely lost, although the value will decrease somewhat.

  • Is it part of a wider collection?

If the painting is part of a bigger collection, then the art traders will establish this. If you are trading with a collector, this piece could very well be the one that they are missing in order to complete their collection, in which case the value will increase dramatically if they want it enough.
