Teresita Harina Borromeo has made significant contributions to science and to the world through her work relating to crop science.

  • The qualifications of Teresita Harina Borromeo
Teresita Harina Borromeo has a BSc in Agronomy, which she studied for at the University of the Philippines in Los Banos, and an MSc in Plant Breeding. She is also a Professor in Crop Science Cluster, also at the university.

Her achievements also include being the Chair of the Rice Technical Working Group of the National Seed Industry Council, and also the Examiner for Rice. This latter position is on the behalf of the Plant Variety Protection Office.

She was also heavily involved with the negotiations that took place for the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, where she acted as the Philippine Delegate.

  • Rice
Rice is the staple diet for millions of people throughout the world and as such plays a significant part in the agricultural process. If rice, as a crop, were to fail, it would literally bring on the starvation and deaths of many, and as world population is at its highest and still growing it is imperative that crops such as this are maintained and developed.

It is for this reason that Teresita Harina Borromeo, and others like her are continually striving to produce rice seeds that are more disease resistant and are able to grow more quickly than previous types. Others are developed so that they produce more grains, which altogether means a healthier and more productive crop.
