When I am out at night, there are shadows, then blacker under trees, etc.  If you are in a cave with zero light, the black seems palpable against your eyes.  When dawn adds light, yes, things start to turn gray, but I think different shades of black aren't about adding white, but maybe it's a density thing, more like pixel concentration than color combinations.

Agreed. I think for different types of apparal there is a great BIG difference. But generally speaking, if you compare the gray range as it approaches black, there are less 'names', for those shades of dark gray/light black. For example, taupe, pumice and stone are used for pants colors down near the white range. I suggest the following; shadow, nightsky & silloutte for some dark grays colors.

I'd say no, gray is gray.  I've raised 3 kids and believe me I don't dye my hair because it is light black, lol!  Seriously, I think they are different colors.

WHOA, EXCUSE ME AND I'M NOT YOUR BABY, IF YOU READ MY ANSWER, I WAS POKING FUN AT I DON'T COLOR MY HAIR BECAUSE IT IS LIGHT BLACK. AND I KNOW "YES, VIRGINIA, THERE IS A DIFFERENCE" IS A SAYING BUT GET MY NAME RIGHT "Haystack". I ALSO SAID THAT I THINK THAT THEY ARE DIFFERENT COLORS. NEXT TIME READ BEFORE YOU START CRITICIZING AN ANSWER, AND DON'T EVER CALL ME BABY AGAIN, I'VE RAISED 3 CHILDREN AND I AM A GRANDMOTHER, I'M FAR FROM A BABY AND THANK GOD, I HAVE BEEN SO FORTUNATE TO NOT EVER HAVE TO WORK IN A FACTORY IN MY WHOLE LIFE, IT SEEMS TO MAKE SOME PEOPLE RUDE.

Furthermore, I gave two answers, gray is gray then I made the joke about my dyeing my hair, then I said I think they are different colors!

haystack, you need to know how to use good words. You joined here right now and you are already taunting people with not so good language. Yes, there is a difference... between fun and other areas and you need to realise it Realise to draw line between fun and other area. And don't use any "near to abusive or abusive" language. Be friendly and people here in this community will shower love on you. And, did anyone told you commenting/responding in CAPITALS means you are SHOUTING at someone, and that one is another ugly gesture from your very first comment on blurtit.
Both this question and Knutters' answer is just here for fun and Its better to let it remain fun. You are not on a war ground and realise it please. May you be blessed with good sense of humor and nicer words.

No, to lighten a color you add white. Add white to black and you see where I am going. There is only gray, black, and white, which are not technically colors since they are not a part of the light spectrum. These are merely shades (black) and tints (white)

Definitely!...look at a swatch of each piece of material, & if cloth, overlap under fluorescent light and you can see the difference, clearly.

I'd say--No, black is black.  Now, on clothing, you can have two different looking blacks.  However, fabric colors can fade over time--however, if you have clothing that is red, chances are, it's not going to fade to pink.  It will fade and be a faded red, but the overall color is not going to change.  The same is true of black clothing.  A black shirt is not going to fade to gray--it will remain faded black.  This, I imagine, is due to the fabric and not the color itself.  Also, different fabrics will hold the black color differently--thus black denim pants will most likely be a different color than black socks.  And charcoal isn't black, either, merely a color spectrum between gray and black.  So, black is still black.
