It all depends what genre you're writing. With fantasy, my characters last names are usually really uncommon or don't actually exist. But with ghost stories using a last name like Cadaver *found in 'The Graveyard Book'* Will raise suspicion as well as be quite an eerie last name. Try looking through a Thesaurus for synonyms. Remember what genre your are writing though. I hoped that helped some!

Well take the first letter of the first name and count 13 letters after the first letter of the first name  and make it the first letter of the last name.
Examples:
1. Aaron ... Nokim
2. Judy ... Wikton
3. Sarah ... Fizinglo

What type of book characters? I mean there are so many different genres! But I'll name a few for different genre because you just had to not give us nothing to work with.
Anyway...
Carter, Carver, Josephson, Benedetta, Lucas, Samuels, Preston,
You're welcome, considering you haven't even given me enough info to put real effort into it
