Pedro Escuro was a Filipino scientist who became renowned for his work in the area of rice conservation and production. His biggest achievement is the work he carried out in order to segregate and release nine seed board rice varieties. His work and research into rice has seen him receive a number of top awards from the country, including the Presidential Plaque of merit for great achievement in rice production. He also was awarded the Rizal Pro Patria Honour in 1967.

Born in Nabu, in the Philippines to farmer parents in 1923, Escuro went on to study at the University of the Philippines where he joined their agricultural department. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agronomy in 1952 and in 1954 he went to study in America, enrolling at Cornell in New York to read for an MS in Plant Breeding. He specialized in genetics, particularly the breeding of rice plants. He then went on to study for a Doctorate in plant breeding at the University of Minnesota.

Following his education, he returned to the Philippines to work on a number of successful rice breeding projects for which he went on to receive 18 different awards from a number of different organizations and authorities. His rice varieties were not just accepted in his home country, but also in Malaysia and Vietnam as well as India. 

After his retirement, Escuro went on to become a farmer in the province of Laguna, continuing to embrace his agricultural roots.
