His father, John, was forced to pull his son out of school at the age of 14, due to financial problems.
William therefore entered his father's shop as a 'wittawer' or, worker of kid, (goat) leather.
He was also supposed to be a lawyer's clerk, a schoolteacher, and a soldier in the Low Countries, (Netherlands), fighting to keep Antwerp free from Spanish rule.
It is sometimes stated, that he circumnavigated the World, accompanying Drake on his fantastic voyage of discovery.
  Whatever.
He turns up in London, 7 years after 'disappearing', at the 'Rose' theatre, owned by the entrepeneur Philip Henslowe, working for the company and studying its greatest ever playwright Christopher Marlowe!
